Flashback: Lauryn Hill Gets Booed On Showtime At The Apollo Theatre

1988 | Apollo Theatre, New York, NY

Grammy award winning superstar Lauryn Hill is set to perform a few select East Coast dates including shows at the Bowery Ballroom and 9:30 Club. It’s hard to believe that her critically acclaimed album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, was released over 15 years ago. Back then she was deemed the future of music by critics and fans alike. But then she dissapeared from the public eye to become a mother and activist. She also ran into some legal issues including a three-month prison sentence for tax evasion.

Before Lauryn Hill became a member of the Fugees and one of the most popular female artists in the world, she was a middle class teenager in New Jersey with a beautiful voice, big dreams and tough demeanor. But it wasn’t love at first sight. Check out video footage from 1988 of a 13-year-old Hill performing the Smokey Robinson classic, “Who’s Lovin’ You,” in “Amateur Night at the Apollo.” It didn’t go as well as you would expect.

“Before debuting in Sister Act 2, a clearly nervous L Boogie tried to win over the Harlem crowd with her rendition of Smokey Robinson’s ‘Who’s Lovin’ You.’ At first, she stood too far away from the microphone, and her wobbly delivery drew an immediate chorus of boos from the audience. But after picking up the mic, she loosened up a bit and eventually won over the crowd. It still wasn’t enough, as she still went home a loser that night.” – Complex Music
