Flashback: A Tribe Called Quest Perform Showtime at The Apollo

October 27th, 1990 | Apollo Theatre, New York, NY

Hip-hop legends Q-TipPhife Dawg and Ali Shaheed Muhammad have joined forces yet again to perform two opening dates for Kanye’s Yeezus tour Wednesday, Novemeber 20th and Sunday, November 24th. The original Tribe claim that this will be their final performance as a group, but lets hope that’s just an exaggeration since they have reunited several times in the past.

To prepare ourselves for what should be an epic performance this Sunday, here’s a look at the Tribe performing for Showtime at the Apollo all the way back in 1990. Showtime at the Apollo was one of the first television shows to feature live performances from talented, up and coming or established hip hop, R&b and soul acts. These acts included Run-D.M.C., The Notorious B.I.G. and Mary J. Blige just to name a few. For A Tribe Called Quest their appearance on Showtime came early in their career, with the Tribe performing their infectious single “Can I Kick It?” off their first album, People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm.

“Years before Jay Z asked the Mad Wednesdays crowd if he could kick it on “22 Two’s,” A Tribe Called Quest rocked the Apollo with their “Can I Kick It?” single, which asked the same question. Q-Tip and Phife Dawg (who sported an Orlando Magic snapback and Champion hoodie) had the people on their feet, spitting their Linden Boulevard styles, and killing it with the call and response chorus. This is how you rock a crowd, young blood.” – NAHRIGHT
