Maxwells means a lot of things to a lot of people. The all ages, legendary venue has been a Hoboken, NJ staple since 1978. Unfortunately they are being forced to close their doors on July 31st. An emotional outpouring of support from fans and musicians alike has been continuous since the news first broke. Arguably, the band that holds Maxwells closest to their heart is New Jersey’s Titus Andronicus.
Last night Titus played their final Maxwells show after a three night stint. The energy was off the charts as lead singer Patrick Stickles reminisced about his adolescent memories at Maxwells between sets. He even paused to chat about his dad saying, “You wanna hear a story about my dad? He’s in the house tonight. He once said to me, ‘You’re a crazy motherfucker and you’ve acted like this since the day you could walk. And if you keep acting like this you’re gonna end up dead or institutionalized.’ You know what? He was fucking right. Rock and Roll! I love him to death though. He’s actually been really supportive of me.”
They kicked off the night with one of their most popular songs “A More Perfect Union” followed by crowd pleasers “Richard III” and “Escape From No Future.” After that Stickles announced to the crowd that these would be the only popular songs that they were playing tonight and that they were free to leave if that’s all they came to see. He then proceeded to test out some new material from the upcoming 29-track album. Members of the opening band Heeney joined the stage for the last song of the night which, in a salute to the Garden State, was a cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “Glory Days.” One of the members jumped into the crowd for one final surf and the mosh pit went crazy.
-Lead singer, Patrick Stickles throwing shade at the New Jersey frat bros saying, “Remember that your idea of fun isn’t the same as everyone else’s. Respect everyones space. I don’t want to see any of that New Jersey frat bro gangbang shit.”
-”Yet another crazy scheme to be like Bruce Springsteen,” said Stickles as he explained to the crowd how he had tried and failed to create some sort special guitar pick-up for the set.
-The outpouring of love and memories shared by Titus and the crowd thorough the whole show. It seemed that everyone had their very own Maxwells story to share.
Watch as lead singer Patrick Stickles shares his favorite Maxwells memories. Essentially a trip down lovers lane.
